C., under the Act of March 3, 1879. editorial What should we expect of a chamber of commerce? All too often the citizens of a community see only this side of the ledger and form their conclusions accordingly. But, whether we like to admit it or not, there is another aspect that is equally as important, if not more so. The question might well be turned around to read: What should the chamber of com merce president and directors expect of the com munity? The chamber of commerce is an organization of business and professional men and women working in all fields to promote the economic, cultural, and educational growth of the community. With this announced purpose the president and directors are expected to work to secure new industries, and in dustrial expansion, direct and develop favorable publicity for the town and community, aid in the growth of agriculture, promote markets, building of highways, improve education, aviation, and dozens of other projects that help the community. Just where does the individual fit into this scheme of things? No civic body is any stronger than the support which it receives from the city as a whole. The individual must lend support not only by joining and paying dues but also by attending meetings, boosting verbally, and giving unqualified co operation. Only by cooperation between the citizens and the chamber of commerce and by working together may the desired results be achieved. The Black Mountain chamber of commerce belongs to YOU. If it doesn’t do the things which you think it should, YOU and only YOU have the power to change it. It takes no more energy to work constructively within the chamber of commerce than it does to complain of what is not done—Cooperation will accomplish wonders. Try it and be convinced.
